Essay topics:

In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option. The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits. For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate. Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities

The reading and wiritng both discusses about the employees demand for working fourdays per week. The author of the reading feels that this would benefit company,it's workers aswell as the whole nation. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that, the decrease in the working days could have following three drawbacks.

To begin, the author argues that the policy of working four-day a week benefits the company's profit. The article mentions that the employees mental state would directly benfit company by reducing the mistakes during the work.Additionally, it states the addition to staffs to do the new job would lead to efficient job in less time with same expense for the company. This specific argument is challenges by the lecturer. He claims that, the increase in the number of staffs to do the same job would force the company to spend more.He adds to his statemant claiming the new staffs would need training and health benefit, more space in the office and more computers to more on.As reverse, the money from the company's profit will be decreased.

Secondly, the writer suggests the working policy would benefit the nation as a whole by decreasing the unemployment rate. In the article it is said that, the workload would be shifted to the other person benefting the employ. The lecturer pokes hole in the author's claim by mentioning that the company would demand the employees to finish a five days work in only four days. He elaborated on this by bringing up the point that it makes the same job arcane and no addition of employees would be done by the company to save it's profit.

Thirdly, the author posists that reduced woring hour would give employees to spend quality time with their family.More over in the article it is stated that employees can pursue their private interest and enjoy leisure activities. In contrast lecturer's position is that the reduced working hour could risk the job stability of the employees. He notes that company could promote only those employees who work for five days which would reduce the advancing career of the employee and also could end up loosing job.
