Should museums and art galleries be free of charge for the general public, or should a charge, even a voluntary charge be levied for admittance? What is your opinion?
It is generally argued that weather the entrance to historical buildings such as museums and art galleries must be free for local people or should impose a minimal or voluntary charge in the entry ticket. In my opinion, while I believe that the cost-free service could promote national pride; however, it is required to collect money from the general public for the maintenance of these monuments.
To begin with, specific entrance fees by people could help to preserve these buildings for the future. In other words, these ancient buildings require regular care and maintenance, which could only be possible with the renovation, that can be done with public money. If a museum contains updated services as well as things related to the past, it would lure people to visit again, and save them for years. A national museum of sports in India, for instance, has a limited ticket cost for entry. This money is used by its management, to update the facilities for the visitors, or to protect its beauty and history for the upcoming generations.
Moreover, government subsidence could not afford the salaries to workers of art galleries. As most of the historical buildings are partially aided by the administration, the funds could not help to raise salaries to its caregivers. If a compulsory entrance is imposed to the public along with some voluntary funds, everything runs smoothly as all the staff get their monthly earnings without hassle. Take the case of art galleries in Finland; they have employed a lot of employees to address the visitors with directions or as language translators. Their income is partly dependent on public money or government subsidies as the council funds are limited.
In conclusion, although the exemption of money from people to the historical monuments increases cultural and country’s dignity, yet I believe that particular entry fees from local people should be levied to admittance, just to sustain the heritage of museums and galleries,
