Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading people to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it.

In a consumerism-driven world, advertisements have become increasingly omnipresent. While some people argue that promotion campaigns have mastered the art of persuasion, others opine that their ubiquity has rendered them less appealing to the public. In my opinion, even though customers’ awareness about the tricks marketers use to tempt them into shopping, they still fall for these gimmicks, further consolidating the success of the advertising industry.
On the one hand, it is true that over the years, consumers have become soberer when faced with the enticement of commercials. One of the underlying reasons for this shift in attitude is the prevalence of advertisements. As the retail sector keeps on expanding, manufacturers have to deal with increased rivalry. Therefore, to channel shoppers’ attention toward a certain product, companies resort to implementing extravagant promotion campaigns and bombarding customers with all these TV commercials, posters, or billboards. As a result, it is hard for one particular item to captivate a shopper only at a brief glance. In a sense, the public has grown more immune to these traditional forms of advertisement.
On the other hand, the proliferation of consumerism is solid proof that people continue to fall prey of marketing tactics. Despite the saturation of the retail sector, companies have managed to up their advertising game by playing psychological tricks and making use of technological advancements. First, almost every big producers these days use celebrity endorsement to lure customers. Since glamorous stars are often considered the embodiment of perfection, consumers have a tendency to associate the acquisition of a certain product with the ability to be like their aspiring figures. The more renowned the celebrity, the more desirable the product. Ironically, as old as this marketing technique is, it remains an infallible classic. Moreover, developments in technology and social media platforms, such as Facebook or Instagram, have given rise to targeted ads. When a person searches for a product on the Internet, the cookies left behind as well as their search history are utilized for websites to run pop-ups and sponsored ads based on that person’s current needs. However cautious a shopper is, resisting the temptation of purchasing an item is a daunting task when they are constantly reminded of the existence of that product.
In conclusion, even though the pervasiveness of conventional forms of marketing has made them less compelling to the public, advertising, in general, has managed to gain an edge over customers by playing mind games and exploiting social media to sway them to make impulsive purchases. And perhaps, the triumph of advertisements over average consumers will prevail for years to come.
