However, the average carbon dioxide emissions per person in the UK still ranked first despite the decrease.
As the graph shows, starting at approximately 11 tonnes in 1967, the average carbon dioxide emission per person in the UK decreased steadily to around 9 tonnes in 2007, but it still ranked first during the whole period. Emissions in Sweden first experienced a sharp increase from about 9 tonnes in 1967 to above 10 in 1977. Then it declined significantly to below 6 tonnes in 2007.
By contrast, the emissions in Italy saw considerable growth from around 4 tonnes in 1967 to above 6 in 1977. Afterward, it rose steadily to just below 8 tonnes in 1997, before leveling off at this figure between 1997 and 2007. Italy's emissions also surpassed Sweden and became the second-highest after 1987. Regarding the emissions in Portugal, it rose steadily from approximately 1 tonne to about 5 in 1997, then it remains stable between 1997 and 2007.
