Essay topics:

Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific methods proposed in the reading passage.

Both the reading and the lecture are about the laser vision correction. The reading claims that this procedure has a number of problems. On the contrary, the professor refutes points made in the reading, trying to prove them wrong and as a misconception from the author of the book.

First and foremost, the writer points out that one of the problems of laser vision correction is that surgery is expensive. Not everyone could afford that. However, the lecturer cannot disagree more, saying that recently the cost of eye surgery is reduced by thirty percent. Therefore, people could afford it. The professor elaborates further by saying that the cost is lowering because the cost of equipment went down and the number of eye surgeons is increased. As a result of competition, the price has decline.

The second argument the author gives is that problems after surgery could rise. For example, after the procedure cornea could be detached. Nevertheless, the lecturer declares that there were reported only few cases of this problem. The person who experienced cornea's detachment was climbing the mount of Everest. Consequently, the high altitude and the pressure cause that problem. Therefore, this issue is not effective for everyone.

Finally, the passage mentions the recovery time, which takes weeks and months, and that is inconvenient. On the other hand, the teacher explains that reports have shown that the recovery time is only two to three days. But, different people may react differently. Doctors have seen that the length of this correction has lasted about twenty years. This tells us that this procedure is beneficial for people who need eye correction.

In conclusion, the reading's points contrast with the lecturer's arguments.
