TPo32- Integrated Task
The reading and the lecture are both about the sources of strange noises -named quackers- started from 1960s to 1980s in Russian submarine. Whereas the author of the reading states that there are some theories that suggest the sources of odd noises, the lecturer suggests that these theories are not convincing. The lecturer casts doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
First of all, according to the reading, the first theory assumes that these sounds can be from the the female orca whale that try to attract male one. However the lecturer disputes this point. She says that it is highly unlikely that these sounds come out from orca whales. To explain more, she mentions that orca whales live near the surface of the water, so the sailors can't hear the whales sound.
Secondly, the reading states that these sounds might be from giant squids which are living deep in the ocean and as they are very smart, it seems that they can emit sound. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. She argues that the strange sounds started in 1960s and continue to 1980s. Since the squids were living in the ocean from 1980s until now, so the sounds should be heard until then. Consequently, the squids can't be the reason of the sound, while the sound can't suddenly disappear in one decade.
Finally, the reading claims that these sounds maybe from other countries' military objects in the submarine that used special technology to be hide from sonar. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that while the source of the sound changed direction very quickly, it can't be from a military object because those devices can't move so fast.
