Scientists are considering the possibility of sending humans to Mars in the coming decades. Although there have been successful manned missions to the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s, Mars is 150 times further away from Earth than the Moon is. Thus the project of sending humans to Mars would require solving an array of problems the Moon missions did not have to face.
The listening content contradicts the article on the topic of whether humans have the possibility of traveling to Mars. Firstly, the article says that astronauts have difficulty bringing enough food, water, and oxygen for their trip to Mars because of the distance between Mars and Earth. However, the speaker points out that astronauts can utilize a technique called hipenplant to solve this problem. Through this technique humans can cultivate plant crops by water which allow people to grow plants with relatively small space. In addition, this technique not only provides people food but also releases fresh oxygen.
Secondly, the author mentions that the zero-gravity environment on Mars is harmful to human beings. Likewise, the speaker refutes it and argues that people can avoid this harm by some technique. For example, regular exercise prevents astronauts’ muscle mass from decreasing. And vitamins benefit people to slow down the speed of lowering bone density.
Lastly, the author supposes that because of space radiation on Mars, astronauts will be exposed to danger during their mission. Nevertheless, the speaker argues that the radiation is not always so strong. As a result, people can build a small shield which doesn't add much weight to a spaceship. By this, astronauts can prevent themselves from being attacked by radiation when space radiation is strong and complete their regular mission outside the shield when space radiation is not harmful.
