Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth century Dutch painters However there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him One such painting is known as Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet The pa

The reading and the lecture both discuss whether the painting "Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet" was actually
painted by him. The author feels that it actually for which three possible explanations are provided. Meanwhile, the lecturer
challenges the claims made by the author and believes that they are faulty.
To begin with, the author claims that, the way the lady in the portrait has dressed is quite absurd. The article further insists that
the cap and the coat she has worn comes from two different classes of society which is unlikely in the paintings of Rembrandt.
However, the lecturer contradicts this idea by mentioning that the original painting did not have a fur collar which was found
out upon doing the x-ray analysis. Further, he says that it was done to increase the value of the painting by bringing the touch of
aristocracy in it.
Secondly, the author asserts that the combination of light and shadow does not go together, the face being illuminated by light
where it should have appeared partially dark by shadows. However, the lecturer argues that the original portrait used just the
light colour cloth instead of the aforementioned dark fur collar which justifies the bright face of the lady.
Finally, the article points out that Rembrandt had used multiple pieces of word joined together as a base for the painting. In
contrary, the lecturer contends that like the fur collar, the wood panels too were added later to raise its worth. He further added
that the original painting was actually made on a single piece of wood, just like the one he made for his self-portrait.
