The chart below shows participation in certain leisure activities by children in Australia. Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below.
The grouped bar chart shown above illustrates the gender distribution of Australian kids and young adolescents; namely 5- to 14-year-olds — over different pastimes.
A uniquely striking feature is the universality of watching TV, which is equally taken up by every girl and boy. Such balance is no less unique, since all the other leisure acitvities see a kind of a disproportionate distribution. In all cases but Arts and craft, this imbalance is in favor of boys, which might allude to a general female propensity towards aesthetic scopes.
Back to popularity, however, computer games come next to watching TV, with almost 4 in 5 boys playing them, in comparison with only 3 in 5 girls. With the same female engagement rate, Bike riding follows; however, with a 70 per cent of boys picking it up. A similar relationship is seen between Art and craft and Skateboarding: male kids seem to choose them at the same rate, while female kids are nearly twice as likely to choose the former.
In conclusion, TV makes up an integral part of Australian kids' free time, regardless of their gender. Otherwise, gender seems to play a role in predicting kids engagement in a specific activity. Aside from arts and craft, in which female kids are more predominant, the remaining activities are chosen more by boys in Australia.
