The reading and the listening are about the drastic decline in the yellow cedar populations. The author believes that there are three possible explanations for that decline. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that none of these reasons are adequate.
To begin with, the author suggests that the beatles are the main cause of the decrease in the yellow cedar's population. In addition, the article mentions that the beetles attack the trees and the larvae feed on the wood, resulting in damage of the trees. The lecturer challenges this specific argument by asserting that the healthy yellow cedar trees are more resistant to the insects' infections than any other trees, because their bark contains powerful chemicals that are poisonous to insects. Thus, bettles can only attack the damaged trees. Based on that, beetles are not the fundamental cause of this decline.
Secondly, the writer argues that brown bears are responsible for the decline by their aggressive eating. In the article, it is mentioned that the yellow cedar trees are very rich in sugar which is essential for bears. The lecturer, however, rebuts this point by explaining that bears can not be the main cause for the overall population decline. Moreover, he mentions that the decline occurred all across northwestern North America including the mainland and islands. Since, there are no bears on the islands, bears can not be the cause of the decline.
Finally, the author posits that climatic change in the area caused the root system freezing then damaging the overall health of the tree. Therefore, the yellow cedar population diminished detrimentally. In contrast, the lecturer cast doubt on this claim by pointing out that In fact the elevation in climate can cause more tree damage than freezing can cause, thus freezing can not be the main reason for this decline.
