People learn things better from those at their own level - such as fellow students or coworkers - than from those at a higher level, such as teachers or supervisors.
We have often got ourselves involved in group studies, but only after we have already received the lecture from our teacher or supervisors. A fellow at the same level of expertise as mine would lack the capability of judgement that a teacher is supposed to have by virtue of his profession. The following points are made in context to explain my stand, which is against the given notion.
To begin with, a teacher or a supervisor who is at a higher level generally has more in-depth knowledge of the subject matter that he is supposed to teach. Whereas, a student or a co-worker who is at the same level, either himself gains knowledge on the subject from his supervisors or from his work experiences which can be restricted to some particular content of the subject, only. For instance, during my college days, I would be having a bleak idea on the subject matter by just reading the textbooks unless it was explained to me by a teacher.
Secondly, a teacher or a supervisor is trained in the art of teaching and mentoring unlike a student or a co-worker. The methodological delivery of education has its significance in deciding which topic to prioritize or which area to be taught more elaborately or which content to be analyzed less or more critically etc.. Let's take an example of a general lecture delivered by our teachers where they would hardly ever read out from the textbook, but include their explanations, sometimes PowerPoint presentations and mathematical analysis, if possible.
Last but not the least, a supervisor or a teacher is aware of the right exercises that are required to be taken upon completion of a considered topic. In contrast, a student or a co-worker can only make a suggestion of exercises based on what was only assigned to them. Additionally, this would result in a limited exploration of the subject by the student who is getting to learn things from the fellows at his level. For example, a teacher explores through several different books and comes up with appropriate exercises that help students to gain deeper knowledge and hands-on experience on the subject taught.
I cannot disagree with the fact that our co-workers gain most of their knowledge from experience which is in no way lesser in credibility that what our teachers already have. Yet, in most cases, the former is unaware of the significant teaching methodologies even if they are good at what they are doing.
