This set of the material in the both reading and lecture is about bird populations in the United States. The reading provides three pieces of evidence indicating that due to the negative impact of increasing human population, the number of birds have been decliningg and this issue will intensify in the future. The lecturer, nonetheless, refutes the author's claims by offering three counterclaims.
First, the reading posits that when population of people has been raising, their needs for more places to settle in, free from plants and forest, will increase. This means eliminating birds' habitats. On the other hand, the lecturer takes the view that although human population has casused the number of some birds to decrease, there are many other species have been increasing because of human's intervening, resulting in creating spacious room for some birds. This claim could be demonstrated by city dwellers' complaints about many seaguls and pigeons in cities.
Second, the passage bring up this view that more people need more food, crops and vegetables. In order to achieve such goal, people demand more agricultural area, requring destroying more and more birds' natural habitats. However, the lecturer disputes this point by arguing that USA has approved some regulation related to natural habitats. In fact, according to this policy, less and less land must be undergone for agricultural purposes. The professors adds that applying other strategies such as planting a wide variety crops and in turn gaing more products per land would prevent many habitats from being destroyed.
Third, the passage sheds light on this point that using pesticides in order to harvest more crops has had negative effects on the birds' populations in the USA. The lecturer casts doubt on this point due to the fact that American farmers have been using less poisonous pesticides. They also are planting crops which are more unattractive to insects. As a result, they need no chemical substance for having more food products.
