The reading is about the increasing level of salt in the Salton Sea caused by the rapid evaporation rate. Its states provided three ways to reverse the trend that is threatening the lake's health. Conversely, in the lecture, the professor holds a different view that all these solutions are not realistic or practical and points to inaccuracies in each of the author's reasons.
First of all, the article posits that one way is removing salt directly by desalination facilities include pumping water to somewhere else, evaporation, cooling it down, and returning it to the lake. The lecturer refutes this point by explaining that there are several problems and side-effects in this way. When water evaporates, some solid components remain which can produce some health problems. According to her, remained materials contain chemicals such as toxic selenium, and if it is carried with the wind, it can be dangerous for people.
Secondly, the reading asserts that dilution of the salt level with ocean water by bringing it via pipelines or canals. However, the speaker says this action needs a great budget. The local government can't effort it because the ocean is one hundred miles away. As a result, using pipes or canals can be very expensive.
Thirdly, the article states that another solution is controlling the level of salt by the construction of the wall and dividing the lake. On the other side, the lecturer opposes this by saying that this solution is not durable. Different kinds of a disaster such as an earthquake can adversely affect it. In a short time, these walls can separate the lake, but after a while, when an earthquake happens, the walls will collapse and won’t work anymore.
