Toward the end of his life the Chevalier de Seingalt 1725 1798 wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures The Chevalier was a somewhat controversial figure but since he met many famous people including kings and writers his memoir has become a
The reading and the lecture are both about Chevalier de Seingalt's memoir. The author provides three examples of why his memoir cannot be trusted. The lecturer challenges the statements made by the author. Her position is that his memoir is accurate and a valuable historical source.
According to the reading Chevalier used to borrow huge sums of money. The article mentions that a really rich person, would not need to borrow money. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that his wealthy came mainly from physical assets. Additionally, he points out that these assets took some time to sell, like lands for example, and that he borrowed money for liquidity purposes, only until he received his money.
Secondly, the author suggests that the conversations depicted in the memoir are not accurate, like the one between Chevalier de Seingalt and Voltaire. The article notes that there is no doubt that they met, but the memoir was written many years later, so it is impossible to recall exact phrases. The lecturer, however, asserts that Seingalt, right after these conversations happened, wrote them down. He elaborates on this by mentioning that during the time the memoir was being written, Seingalt kept checking his notes, so he could better describe what happened.
Finally, it is stated in the article that his escape from the prison through the roof is not likely. The author establishes that it is more probable that jailers were bribed, by friends with political power, to set him free. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that the escape happened as written. He notes that other prisoners had friends with bigger political power that never escaped, and also that old documents from Venice states that the ceiling had to be repaired after his escape.
