Abortion should be legal
Firstly, the legalization of abortion will benefit women both in terms of physical and mental health. Physically, in some emergencies, the removal of the baby will be seen as the only way to save and protect the mother from death. For example, the mother's health is not good enough to continue the pregnancy, otherwise, the mother has a very high risk of death. Another case is that the fetus is not in the uterus but on the outside, the removal of the baby will help the mother to avoid the possibility of infertility. In addition, the number of unsafe abortions is likely to increase when policies limit access to reproductive health care. A study conducted by the World Health Organization and the Guttmacher Institute found that the vast majority of abortions are safe in countries where abortion is broadly legal, while most are unsafe in countries where it is highly restricted. Psychologically, a recent study of Turnaway shows that women who are denied an abortion are more likely to initially experience higher levels of anxiety, lower life satisfaction, and lower self-esteem compared with women who received an abortion. Specifically, among women who received an abortion, depression and anxiety symptoms remained steady or decreased over the 2 years after the procedure. Besides that, levels of anxiety symptoms were initially higher among those denied an abortion compared with those receiving one, but the two groups converged over time. In addition, women who received abortion close to gestational age limits initially had similar levels of depression and lower levels of anxiety compared to women who were denied abortions and subsequently carried their pregnancies to term. In the years since abortion became legal in the United States, thanks to the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, there has been vigorous debate regarding the impact of abortion on a woman's mental health. However, research has shown that having an abortion does not increase a woman's risk for depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder. A review of the scientific literature conducted by an APA task force and released in 2008 indicated that the relative risk of mental health problems following a single elective first-trimester abortion is no greater risk to mental health than carrying that pregnancy to term. Among women who do experience mental health issues, the APA report concluded that these issues may be related to co-occurring risk factors that predispose a woman to multiple unwanted pregnancies and mental health problems.
Secondly, according to researchers, abortion contributes to many important solutions to many problems in society such as the crime rate and the environment. Recently, severe disorders, mental illness, drug addiction are among the most serious social problems. Most crimes are the person who grew up in a background of parental rejection, neglect, and lack of guidance and discipline. Considerable research has been done in regard to the causes of behavioral disorders during the last 50 years, resulting in fairly widespread agreement among behavioral scientists that the most important causal influence on personality development and behavior patterns in adulthood is the quality of care given to children during their formative years, especially from age I year through 5 years. If a child is raised in an atmosphere of love and affection, coupled with reasonable and consistent discipline and guidance, this usually confers life-long immunity against developing seriously disordered behavior. By contrast, a background of parental rejection, neglect, and lack of guidance and discipline is almost invariable in the life histories of persons with disturbing behavior. If women are raped when they are adolescents, have no sense of motherhood or the psychological shock of being raped, and when the mother gives birth, they will not love the baby, even show hatred, cursing all day affects the psychology of the children in the future. When the children grow up without love and the education of family, they will become a bad part of society. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done to influence parents to do a better job of raising their children. The most promising method for improving the quality of child care is to ensure that no woman is forced to bear an unwanted child. Each year, among the 800,000 women in the United State who bear unwanted children, many undoubtedly are able to provide adequate care for their children, but just as certainly, many thousands are unable or not motivated to do so. In this case, the legalization of abortion is the most feasible way to ensure that a high proportion of children born are wanted, improve the quality of child care, and, by so doing, decrease the incidence of severe behavioral disorders. On the other hand, controlling the birth rate also helps preserve the quality of the environment significantly. Almost the quality of the environment will be imbalanced until the population growth is halted. When the pollution grows year by year with the industrial and the agricultural production are steadily increasing threat that the environment will become so badly poisoned by pollutants of various types that its capacity to sustain life may become irreversibly destroyed. According to researchers, each year about 800,000 unwanted children are born in the US, since the excess of births over deaths in the United States in recent years has been approximately 1.5 million annually, prevention alone of 800,000 unwanted births would decrease the rate of population growth by more than half. The legalization of abortion as a backstop method of birth control offers the best hope of bringing about a significant reduction in the incidence of unwanted births, and in fact, is probably the only feasible way that this can be achieved in a reasonably short time. Abortion has none of the shortcomings of other contraceptive methods. Abortion requires no foresight or planning and thus can give even the most careless and impulsive woman successful control over her reproduction. By adding legalized abortion to our present armamentarium of imperfect contraception, a nearly foolproof system of voluntary family planning can be created virtually overnight. So, the legalization of abortion is probably the single most effective and practical measure that can be taken to lower the birthrate, and, by doing so, preserve the environment from further deterioration.
Many opponents of abortion might say that abortion is inhumane, and wrong ethically. However, this also can be argued that termination of pregnancy is humane and necessary. When the fetus shows signs of a birth defect or mental disorder, the mother is advised to abort the baby. Here are some shreds of evidence that mothers should consider abortion: half of the babies born with anencephaly will not survive birth and the other half die within hours or days. A chromosomal condition such as trisomy 13 or trisomy 18 can result in a baby with a short lifespan; 90 percent of babies with either of these conditions do not survive past one year old and are frequently afflicted with health problems and medical interventions throughout their lives, and mothers will have more difficulties in raising the baby both physically and mentally. Take, for instance, babies with Down syndrome situations. Problems include certain birth defects, learning problems, and facial features. A child with Down syndrome also may have heart defects and problems with vision and hearing. According to the National Down Syndrome, more than 6,000 babies with Down syndrome are born in the United States each year. However, almost none are born in Iceland. That's because nearly 100 percent of women in Iceland who receive a positive test for Down syndrome choose to terminate the pregnancy. As University of Western Australia researcher Carol Bower reported, she attributed the significant rise in Down syndrome terminations which reached a peak at nearly 90%.
