It is becoming increasingly popular to have a year off between finishing school and going to university. Do the advantages of having a year off outweigh the disadvantages?
It is true that taking a gap year is becoming a popular trend among many young people. This time off permits them to take a break after a long time studying. Some can use this time to travel around the world while others do volunteer work or take extracurricular activities, learn new skills and complete their perfect profile so that they can enter a qualified university. However, this trend causes a controversial question about whether or not students should have a gap year. In my opinion, it’s quite difficult to decide to support or reject the statement above because this trend has its good and bad point. Let’s take a look at both sides of the issue!
Firstly, I would like to put priority on the merits which a gap year brings. The most important advantage is having sufficient amount of time to improve themselves. During studying, students have to put their strong attention on academic subjects and exams so they do not have enough time so as to participate in volunteer work, extracurricular activities and foreign language.
In a year off, Students should be encouraged to do these things to improve all necessary soft skills to fulfill the best profile that supports them a lot in entering university. Furthermore, an additional advantage of gap year would be relaxing. Twelve years is definitely a very long time which contains plenty of depression and long - term attempts. Therefore, before continuing trying their best at university, take a long break and enjoy it with family. That is also an ideal time to reset daily routine, improve physical and mental health before starting something new.
Despite these aforementioned benefits, several drawbacks of gap year do exist. While some young people use this time reasonably, others enjoy a year with unuseful ways like playing games, staying at home and disregarding learning new things. Consequently, knowledge and some soft skills get lost gradually which will cause students many difficulties when they start studying in university.
Weighing up both sides of the argument, it is unequivocal that disadvantages of taking a gap year are negligible as compared to the advantages. In my opinion, taking a year long break is potentially beneficial. However, it is also an individual decision, so I believe that each person should consider what their direction is so that they can decide a desirable choice.
