In this reading, the author declares three benefits of giving rewards or incentives to employees for achieving health-related goals. However, the professor in the lecture casts doubt on all of them.
Firstly, according to the passage, the author argues that awards and incentives provide motivation for people to stay healthy as shown in two surveys. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes that the benefits of incentive program are not impressive because the motivation will not last for long time. He points out in a similar study, which lasted for a long period, people motivated by awards and incentives to keep healthy went back to the previous lifestyle after two years. That is to say, people who quitted smoking started to smoke again and people who lose weight gained the weight back.
Secondly, the author argues that incentive program is fair for people who stay healthy to pay less health insurance fee or get more vacations because they are less likely to cause medical costs. In one hand, the professor admits that it is fair for the people manage to healthy life successfully. On the other hand, the professor also claims that healthy status depends on many factors. For one thing, people are busy for taking care of their parents or children may not have enough time to do exercise. For another, people own different ability to stay heathy. For example, overweight issue might springs from genetic aspects, which may not be controlled by healthy life style. Thus, it is unfair to those people to pay more health insurance than others.
Finally, while the author presents that incentive method could save money for companies in the long term, the professor doubts that by saying that this connection is unclear. He says that the effects of this program may take years to show up, however, the employees usually will not stay in a company for that long. Therefore, it may not be financially beneficial to company, because employees will leave and work in other companies.
To sum up, the author shows us three reasons in favor of the incentive program, which contradicts the main ideas of the professor in the lecture.
