Essay topics:

There are many people who think that parents should choose ways for their children to spend their free time. However, there are many others who disagree and believe that children should be allowed to use their time on activities they choose.

It is true that parents have a significant influence on children’s upbringing. While many people argue that parents should decide what types of activity their children need to spend time for, there is a widespread agreement to the contrary that children should have the right to take up their preferred activities.

On the one hand, parents claim that they are responsible for giving priority to their children’s safety. In reality, there are a number of dangerous activities which are at risk of accidents for children, for example climbing. This causes considerable worries to those who are fathers and mothers, leading to the idea of keeping their children away from those activities. In addition, during the children’s formative years, shaping their personalities may be affected badly without their parent’s care. Many parents are aware of this importance and encourage their children to take part in activities which bring significant benefits to later life such as playing chess for the development of their intelligence.

On the other hand, the freedom of children in pursuing their own interests is widely believed to be equally important. First of all, proponents of this idea argue that this is able to stimulate children’s creativity as well as the quality of their independence. For instance, they could gain the capacity of making decisions in different cases and make most of the knowledge which they learn from various activities to support their subjects in school. Another point of view is that promoting the pursuit of numerous hobbies can enable them to awaken their inner fire. As a result, this provides a good basis for further development like choosing the major at the university.

By way of conclusion, the first position pays much more attention to children’s safety, while the second respects the freedom of children’s choice. Yet, I believe that parents should let children feel free to do their loved things as long as they are under the watchful eyes of their parents.
