Essay topics:

Companies spend millions each year on advertising online, in magazines and on bill-boards. These adverts can encourage people to buy goods that they do not really need. What are the Positive and Negative effects of consumerism?

There is a saying "Build or Achieve and then Advertise". Following the same approach companies are spending millions every year on promoting their products and services via online medium to create demand and encourage people to buy goods or services which they do not even need. This trend has both positive as well as negative aspects which will be discussed further in this essay.

To begin with the positive side of advertisements is the medium to reach out to end consumer to make them aware of the product and services being launched in the market. Also, considering the trend companies are now coming up with innovative promotional campaign to showcase it as solution provider. Let us look at the example where-in one of the company advertised that now their clients have an option to rent a car instead of buying a new one, which could save them from Down Payments, EMIs and more. Though the consumers did not have any plans to buy new car immediately but they chose to consider this option for future before planning.

On the other hand, some companies use advertisements to create artificial needs among consumers by endorsing celebrities. Eventually, this lead to increase in product cost. Let us consider the same example as mentioned above, instead of just providing awareness in the market company decided to include celebrity face to endorse, to add credibility and to attract more buyers. And, now this would lead to increase in final delivery cost.

In the ultimate analysis, it can be observed that advertising the product is must and should be a recurring practice as well however there should also be a benchmark so that it should not affect the end-consumer pocket.
