The charts below show the percentage of water used for different purposes in six areas of the world.
The six pie charts compare the domestic, agricultural, and industrial water consumption in six major parts of the world.
Overall, the majority of water is used for industrial purposes in North America and Europe, while water is mostly used to support agriculture in other regions/areas. Additionally, the amount of water consumed for domestic demand accounts for the lowest percentages, except South America, Central Asia and Africa.
In both North America and Europe, the principal water use appears in the industrial sector, which accounted for nearly half of the total. However, water usage for this need is the smallest proportion in the other four locations, with 12% in South East Asia, 7% in South America, 7% in Africa, and 5% in Central Asia, respectively.
By contrast, households in North America and Europe have utilized water resources at the least number, with only 14% and 15%, respectively, which is still much more than the figures for the other four countries. In correspondence, in Southeast Asia and Central Asia, less than 10% of water is used for home demands.
The developing areas invest far more water in agriculture, each having around 80%, and even the least, the figure for South America still constitutes 71% while in Southeast Asia and Central Asia utilize considerably more water in agriculture, ranging from 81% to 88%. However, in Africa and Central Asia even use less water in industry (merely 5%~7%, with the highest percentage 12%)
