TOEFL Integrated
Both the passage and the lecture deals with the question whether it is beneficial to use nuclear power. Although the passage clearly states that they have a lot of negative impacts, the lecturer argues the points made in the passage and reaches a different conclusion in each case.
Firstly, according to the passage, nuclear energy resources will pose a significant problem for future generations since the majority of the nuclear power creates nuclear waste that is extremely dangerous for human health. However, the lecturer opposes this idea by claiming that using nuclear resources causes fewer deaths than pollution from other resources of energy such as coal based resources. Additionally, he says that even renewable sources of energy cause more devastating effect on nature. Therefore nuclear energy is more advantageous in terms of the damage it results.
Secondly, the lecturer addresses the problem which is about the duration of the nuclear waste. He suggests that we are currently working on possible solutions and we will come up with a solution eventually. Moreover, he says that this will be a short term problem because there are monetary incentives involved and that we are not in a rush.
Finally, the lecturer disagrees with the idea that we can count on solar and wind energy system since these energy source do not supply a perpetual energy when the weather conditions change. Consequently, we need nuclear power to provide us consistent energy when it is not windy or sunny.
