“Everyone should be taught the history of their own country.” Do you agree?
History is the study of past events, and can serve as a means to find a way in life. The subject of history is compulsory at all the levels of education. The importance and compulsoriness of the subject has been debated, and, in my view, children should be taught about the history of their country and the world.
To start with, history broadens people’s views of society and the world. It shows us how people from the past worked and lived, while also showing us the origins of certain traditions of our countries. For instance, Vietnamese children should know about the wars of Vietnam. That way, they can value the sacrifices that the soldiers made and appreciate the life they have today.
Moreover, history makes us conscious about our national identities. This is one of the reasons that the subject is taught around the world. When one digs deep into their roots, they will learn more about how their family was formed, what achievements their forefathers had, and how their family interacted with others. During this process, one will truly learn to cherish the life that they have thanks to the efforts of people in the past.
Besides, the learning of past events can potentially save one’s life. Earlier atrocities, such as genocides, wars, and attacks can assist us in defending against those very things. Knowing what affairs that have led to mishaps in the past will greatly aid in shaping the future.
Historical stories that feature heroic people and their acts can inspire many people to do good things or overcome their privations. Those who overcame torture during wars in the past can be aspiring to those who suffer from pressure and/or abuse. The stories of generals and their soldiers bravely fighting invaders can light up a dream among children who want to guard and fight for their country.
To conclude, history is an important subject that should be compulsory. Learning about the lives of our ancestors and major events that have had an effect on our lifestyles will widely broaden our views, potentially save our lives, and motivate people to endure their adversities and elevate many to contribute to their country.
