The provided bar chart illustrates the Gross Domestic Product generated from the IT and Service Industry in the UK over the course of eight years starting from 1992. Units are measured in percentage.
A glance at the graph reveals that while both sectors increased as a percentage of total GDP, the IT industry grew at a far more rapid rate when compared to the service sector.
At the beginning of the given period, the IT industry accounted for roughly 6% of GDP, exceeding that of the other sector which stood at exactly 4%. Over the next four years, both sectors experienced overall growth as a proportion of total GDP, despite a slight reduction for IT between 1994 and 1996. While IT remained the larger of the two sectors, the gap between them shrank to around 1%, half of what it had been.
However, after 1996, the pattern of the two components was noticeably different. The IT sector witnessed a swift rise to just over 12% in 1998 before soaring to a new peak of almost 16% in 2000. Meanwhile, the percentage of the Service industry only increased slightly over the past years, contributing roughly 8% at the end of the period.
