The line graph shows the percentage of New Zealand population from 1950 to 2050. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
The line chart compares the proportion of New Zealanders by age group from 1950 to 2050.
It is noticeable that while the rates of people aged over 65 and 25-37 decrease over the period shown, there is an overall increase in the figures for the other age groups. Also, the proportion of people aged over 65 in New Zealand is the highest in all the years.
In 1950, the percentage of people aged over 65 was 60%, more than double the figure for the 38-45 age group, at about 25%. Over the next 40 years, these figures followed a similar pattern, reaching peaks of 70% and under 50% respectively in 1990 before setting a downward trend until 2000. By 2050, the rate of the oldest people is predicted to fall to about 55% while the figure for the second oldest group is expected to remain unchanged at 40%.
Regarding the other categories, initiating at about 5% in 1950, the proportion of the youngest New Zealanders almost stabilized before doubling in 2000 and is predicted to reach 20% in 2050. By contrast, the figure for those aged 25-37 decreased by half to about 10% over the first 40-year period and is expected to keep falling to almost 0% in 2050.
