The article states that altruism is a type of behaviour in which an animal sacrifices its own interest for another animal or group of animals and supports this statement by providing two instances. The professor contradicts this claim by stating that new findings in science force us to reexamine our earlier beliefs and refutes each of the authors instances.
First, the reading states that the unselfish acts among humans include sharing of food with strangers or donation of body organs to family members or strangers. However, the professor refutes this point by saying that the act of donation of an organ to a fellow human being may earn the donor praise from the family members and the society. This praise may increase that donor's self worth. This could be considered as a materialistic reward to the donor which then would nullify the feeling of altruism or selflessness from the act of donating organs.
Second, the article posits in species like meerkats who are mammals, an individual stands guard, looking out for predators while the other members look for food and eat it. It states that thus, the standing guard stays hungry while the other meerkats have food which is an act of altruism. But the professor contradicts this point by stating the findings which say that the meerkats have their food before standing guard and hence the guard is not hungry while guarding the group.
Third, the reading claims that the guard has to issue an alarm which alerts the other members of the group to flee from the approaching predator and thus places the guard in the claws of danger. However, the professor opposes this point by explaining that when the other members hear the alarm, they tend to either move away or get together and thus cause movement which tends to attract the attention of the predator from the guard onto themselves. Hence, the guard is not at danger.
We also learn that the guard takes his position near a burrow and thus, it is easier for him to hide from the predator than it is for the other members of the group.
