TOEFL T P O 1 - Integrated Writing Task
The article states that most workers prefer to work 4 days a week and earn 80 percent of their salary instead of 5 days working. The author provides three reasons to support this statement. However, the professor explains that by implementing this matter none of these reasons mentioned in the passages will occur. He refutes each of the author's reasons.
First of all, the reading claims that shortening the work hours will also increase the company's profits because the workers will do less erroneous actions. So, this issue can make more money for the company. Also, the company can hire more workers without any additional payments. The professor refutes this opinion by saying that hiring additional stuff needs more money for learning new employees and prepare them medical facilities. Also, more workers need more work instruments, such as computers.
Secondly, the article posits that if the workers work less hours, the more job opportunities will available for unemployed people. This matter can decrease the unemployment rate. However, the professor says that the employers will not eulogy new workers, they force their current staff to work at more times instead, and give them the salary as same as the previous.
Third, the reading says that decreasing the working time will effect positively on the workers morale because they will spend more times for their family and their interests. The professor opposes this opinion by saying that during the recession, the workers who work 4 days a week are in priority to fire because the managers prefer to have a worker who has more control on the company's affairs. But, when a worker works less than others will have less attention to his workplace's events.
