Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they oppose specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading passage introduces the idea of altruism or the act of selflessness seen in humans and other mammals and gives examples to explain it. The professor in the conversation explains that some examples considered as altruistic acts in the passage, are in fact not selfless and there is some benefit for the person or the animal performing the deed. These examples are elaborated on in the following paragraphs.
Firstly, the lecturer gives the example of a scientific experiment conducted on meerkats. According to the experiment, the individual meerkat, which is believed to be performing an altruistic act as per the passage, by guarding and looking out for the predators while its group mates search or eat the food, in fact, gets some benefits from the task. For example, they have more chances of survival than their mates in case of an encounter with a predator. Also, these sentinel meerkats eat before their mates. So, it’s not like they are being unselfish and wait for their mates to eat first. Thus, opposing the passage’s example of a guarding meerkat.
Furthermore, the lecturer also says that another example cited in the reading passage on altruistic acts performed by humans is flawed. The passage says that humans perform the unselfish deed of organ donation. But, the professor suggests that there is some gain for the donor. For example- They will receive appreciation from the recipient and the society for performing this task.
To sum up, the professor does not agree with the examples cited as unselfish acts in the reading passage.
