Directions: For this task, you will read a passage about an academic topic and you will listen to a lecture about the same topic. You may take notes while you read and listen. Then you will write a response to a question that asks you about the relationship between the lecture you heard and the reading passage. Try to answer the question as completely as possible using information from the reading passage and the lecture. The question does not ask you to express your personal opinion. You may refer to the reading passage when you write. You may use your notes to help you answer the question. Typically, an effective response will be 150 to 225 words. Your response will be judged on the quality of your writing and on the completeness and accuracy of the content
Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However, there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him. One such painting is known as Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet. The painting was attributed to Rembrandt because of its style, and indeed the representation of the woman's face is very much like that of portraits known to be by Rembrandt. But there are problems with the painting that suggest it could not be a work by Rembrandt. First, there is something inconsistent about the way the woman in the portrait is dressed. She is wearing a white linen cap of a kind that only servants would wearyet the coat she is wearing has a luxurious fur collar that no servant could afford. Rembrandt, who was known for his attention to the details of his subjects' clothing, would not have been guilty of such an inconsistency. Second, Rembrandt was a master of painting light and shadow, but in this painting these elements do not fit together. The face appears to be illuminated by light reflected onto it from below. But below the face is the dark fur collar, which would absorb light rather than reflect it. So the face should appear partially in shadowwhich is not how it appears. Rembrandt would never have made such an error. Finally, examination of the back of the painting reveals that it was painted on a panel made of several pieces of wood glued together. Although Rembrandt often painted on wood panels, no painting known to be by Rembrandt uses a panel glued together in this way from several pieces of wood. For these reasons the painting was removed from the official catalog of Rembrandt's paintings in the 1930
The professor in the lecture does not agree with the reasons given in the reading passage for the non-conformity of the ownership of a portrait of an elderly woman in a white bonnet to a seventeenth-century Dutch painter, Rembrandt.
Firstly, the professor says that an X-ray of the painting showed that the original painting does not consist of the extravagant fur collar as shown in the portrait as it was added hundred years later by someone else to Rembrandt’s painting to make it more formal and valuable. Thus, negating the passage’s explanation that the painting is not his because of the inconsistency in the dress due to a simple linen cap of a servant and luxurious fur collar which is highly unlikely that a servant could afford.
Furthermore, the passage mentioned the incongruency in the light and shadow in the portrait which is unlike any of Rembrandt’s paintings. The lecturer corrected this reasoning by saying that the fur collar which was painted later on the painting caused this issue and that the original painting of Rembrandt consists of a light coloured clothing which reflects the light on the woman’s face.
Lastly, the author cites that the extra wood pieces were glued to the original wooden panel to add the fur collar to the painting. Thus, confirming that the portrait is that of Rembrandt. Also, the wood of the original portrait was from the same tree as the wood used by Rembrandt for his other painting - The Self portrait of a hat.
Thus, the professor does not agree with the passage and suggests that the portrait is Rembrandt’s.
