The Article states that many
The Article states that many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifth (80 percent) of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor states that it will affect the economy, companies and employees themselves and refutes each of the Author's reasons.
First, the reading states that the shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert. Hiring more staff to ensure the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll cost because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. The professor refutes this point by stating that it will affect the companies by spending more money on Hiring new staff, providing training and benefits especially the coast of medical benefits. In addition, more staff needs more offices and more computers.
Second, the article claims that one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates.if many full time employees started working few hours, some of their workload will be shifted to others. However, the professor contend that it will be better for the companies to ask their employees to work overtime that hiring new staff. moreover, working for four days will raise the expectations of the companies when a four day employee can do the job duties of others who works five days per week then no new jobs will be announced.
Third, the reading avers that the four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. It could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families. The professor opposes this point by saying that the four-day workweek is a risk for reducing life quality of individual employees. Decreasing the job stability and their ability to advance their career. Four-day workweek employees will be the first who lose jobs when economy drops. in addition, employers will prefer to promote employees who works five days per week in supervisory positions.
