Eco-Ceritified Essay
The article introduces the topic about the use of ecocertified wood products. More specifically, the author discusses about the reasons contributing to unwillingness of US companies to obtain eco-certification. The lecturer in the listening passage disagrees and believes that thus stated reasons are not true.
In the reading, the author begins by stating that, US citizens are subjected to exaggerated advertisement of products so they ecocertified products won't matter in their purchase. The lecturer, however disagrees with this viewpoint. He states that US consumers trust the claims done by an independent organization and it becomes an influential factor for their purchase.
The author claims that US citizens are cost minded consumers. As the cost of getting the ecocertification of product is passed onto the consumer and they are unlikely to buy those products. Again, the lecturer believes there are flaws in the writer's argument. The speakers points out that when the cost difference is marginal eco friendly consumers are more likely to purchase ecocertified products rather than cheap and uncertified products.
Another reason why the author holds his claim is because he states that the sales of these products are domestic and doesn't require to consider opinion of foreign consumer. The professor in the listening passage is doubtful that this is accurate. He suggests that the possibility of foreign companies with ecocertified products to invest in US market has increased so the US companies should be wary about competitive market in the near future.
To sum up, both the writer and professor hold conflicting views about this matter.
