submarines detecting quackers
The article is a report of strange underwater noises that Russian submarines encountered when patrolling the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean during 1960s through 1980s. These sounds were called "quackers" and the essay represents some theories about the possible origins of them. The lecturer contradicts the points made in the article and illustrares why none of them are plausible.
Firstly, Orca whales mainly live near the surface of the ocean and if the the sounds originated from them, the submarines would have not been able to detect them from deep in the ocean. Moreover, if thee Orca whales were nearby the submarines' sonar would have picked up their presence.
Secondly, the quackers were first detected in the 1960s and continued for two decades until the 1980s; while the giant squid has occupied the ocean long before and after the existence of the sounds. Hereby, there is no explanation for a sudden detection and ceasing of the sound if we assume it was caused by the giant squids.
Finally, it is not plausible that the quackers were originated from any military technology on the basis that the quackers would change directions quickly and no engine sound was detected accompanying them. Even today, Such fast submarines with extremely silent engines have not been manufactured. On the other hand, another submarines' presence would have been recognized on the sonar.
