Recently, there has been a debate about whether Brendan the Navigator was able to be the first to travel to North America with his crew members. The reading and the lecture both discuss this controversial topic. Whereas the author believes it is true and supports his/her idea through three remarks, the lecturer is quick to point out that there are some flaws and cast doubt on each claim given by the writer.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states that stories about Brendan’s voyage mention a few places that his crew would have visited on the journey, such as Iceland, Greenland, and other kinds of islands. Besides, the characteristics heard in the tales match the description of the islands. Nevertheless, the professor stands in firm opposition to this claim. In the listening, he states that the description explained in the tales could refer to something else, for example, "burning hill," which could indicate Iceland, but it could also literally mean a hill that is being burnt.
Secondly, the passage notes that a team of researchers created an ancient Irish boat resembling Brendan's ship. It goes on to say that the researchers sailed on it from Ireland to North America, proving that the techniques and materials utilized during the 16th century were advanced enough for a long journey. Nonetheless, the professor argues that the ship constructed by the experts was longer and contained more people, making the task of traveling to a region easier than Brendan and his crew alone.
Lastly, the article asserts that markings discovered in North America resemble the ogham letters used by the ancient Irish, specifying Brendan and his helpers settled there and made those symbols for diverse reasons. On the other hand, the professor disputes this argument, contending the markings rather symbolize pictures and graphics made by the Native Americans that inhabited the area.
To sum up, although both the author and the lecturer explore Brendan and his expedition to North America, they both conclude with different views and details. Despite that fact, it is evident that, they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue, and the three points made in the lecture are effectively challenged by the author.
