Humans have been battling the tropical disease malaria since at least the late fourth century B.C. This debilitating and deadly disease is actually a parasite which reproduces in humans and is spread through the saliva of mosquitoes when they suck blood from humans. While there is still no cure for malaria, there are three main strategies that we hope will lead to the eradication of this disease which kills nearly half a million people around the world each year.
The first strategy is to fight the malaria parasite itself by treating patients with powerful prescription medicines. Patients are tested to determine which strain of the malaria parasite is present, as different areas of the world have different strains of the parasite. Then, an effective medicine is administered to combat the symptoms of the infection.
The second strategy is to kill the mosquitoes that transfer the parasite to humans. Killing the adult mosquitoes using chemical sprays is a common option, but the larvae of the mosquitoes can also be killed where they develop, in pools of warm, still water. These larvae can be killed using chemicals, but another popular approach is to release fish into the water that prey on the larvae such as guppies to eat the larvae before they mature into adults.
The third strategy is called the sterile insect technique. "Sterile" means the insect cannot reproduce. This strategy involves breeding and hatching millions of mosquitoes, sterilizing the males with low-level gamma rays, and then releasing them into the wild population. Females that mate with the sterile males produce eggs which do not hatch, and this causes the mosquitoes to die out. This strategy has been effective in wiping out a number of insect pests including the screw-worm and several types of fruit flies
The author and the lecturer talk about the staregies to reduce tropical disease malaria. The reading passage states that it is impossible to cure malaria but there are many effect which can curb the growth of such disease. The lecturer, however, refutes the claim. He says that such strategies will not be as beneficiable as it seems.
First, the author mentions that people can fight with the disease with help of the medicines which we develop by depending the upon different strains of the parasites. The professor, nevertheless, denies this fact. He says that sincethe late fourth century, these parasites has adapted themseleves to fight with the current drugs available. So, it will not be useful to treat malaria by controlling the growth. Further, he says that it will more effective it we try to find the main reasons behind the spread of the disease.
Second, the writes states that if we kill the medium of the spread, then we can control the disease. Here the medium is mentioned as "mosiquitoes". Additionally, he talks about the way to do so. He says that we can spray chemicals which is common option. Further, he mentions that mosquitoe's larva can also be destory with help of chemical or releasing fish into the water body where larvae are breeding. The lecturer denies this claim. He says that it will be unreasonable method to kill mosquitoes along with there larva because they are large in number.
Lastly, the reading passage argues that the sterile insect techniques will be best option to control the growth of the medium of spread ( mosquitoes). He says that sterilizing the male not allow the male praduce egges to get hatched. The professor, however, opposes the idea. He states that such technique can cause decline in the breed of the mosquitoes, though it is beneficial to curb the growth. He explain that it will reduce male reproductive system and that speices will die out
