Both the reading and lecture discuss the difficulties that archeologists confront in order to study historical places. The reading claims that archeology as a field of cultural and historical examination of old sites is faced with serious problems. However, the lecturer finds all mentioned ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the passage holds the view that many constructions projects specially during twentieth century has eliminated valuable artifacts as signs of valuable sites. According to the reading, new buildings which mostly has constructed in British cities destroyed uncovered sites. In contrast, the professor brings up the idea that a guideline which was written in 1990 set some rules for construction companies. They have to let archeologists to examine the place they intend to construct new buildings. If the place is recognized as an uncover site, companies should led archeologists to excavate and document objects found in the place.
Furthermore, the author argues that the financial matter is another problem in doing research for archeologists. In fact, financial supports are only provided by government which are inadequate. On the contrary, the lecturer dismisses the issue due to the fact that according to guideline mentioned in prior paragraph, reconstruction companies which are supposed to make new buildings at those locations are responsible for required budget. In this case, new source of financial supports are available.
Last but not least, the reading asserts that working opportunities for archeologists are confined to universities and government organizations which make living hard for them. As a result, most of them have to choose a second job. Conversely, the professor underlines the fact that a lot of paid works are available which never have been before. For instance, a new project needs examination, preservation of artifacts, research planning, information processing, and writing article that are all the different parts of a project that need new archeologists to work on them.
