In these set of materials, the article states that experts are considering three ways to address the decline of Torreya taxifoha's population. Which is a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida. And it provides three reasons of support. However, the professor opposes the article, she says that these ways can't provide the satisfactory solution. And she refutes each of the author's reasons.
Frist, the reading claims that Torreya used to be abundant in the northern part of Florida. And reestablishing it in this location might be helpful in addressing Torreya's population’s decline. But the professor disagrees with this point, she says that this method is unlikely to be successful. Because micro climates are being affected by the larger region's climate because of the global warming and drying out the wetlands. So Torreya wouldn't have the required survivals conditions.
Second, the reading posits that moving Torreya to entirely different location, where it is cooler can be helpful in surviving it. Conversely, the professor opposes the idea by saying relocating Torrea might have unpredictable results. She gave an example about relocating of the black locus tree. And how its migration affected the balance of another kind of tree, which were already endangered.
Third, the article asserts that Torreya can be preserved in research centers. On the other hand, the professor refutes this point by saying that planting Torreya in research centers wouldn’t be a solution. Because plants can’t resist diseases unless their population is large and genetically diverse. Those conditions are not available in research centers. So Torreya trees can’t survive in these centers.
