Both the reading passage and the lecture talks about the widespread of malaria and methods to stop the mosquitoes to spread the disease in humans. The former talks about three strategies using which the spread of the diease can be prevented. However, the latter challenges all of these three strategies and mentions none os these can eradicate malaria efficiently and completely.
First of all, the passage mentions that one way to win the battle againt malaria is by treating the patients with powerful medicines. Further, the passage suggests that the patients should check which strain of malaria parasite has infected them so the prescription can be given according to that. However, the professor in the lecture argues that there are no drugs that can cure malaria completely. Moreover, the professor mentions that the current mosquitoes have adapted themselve to the drugs and are now immune so, the two medicines that were used for a long time are no longer effective to treat malaria patients.
Second of all, the passage talks about an other way, that is to kill the parasite-carrying mosquitoes using chemical spray. The passage further mentions that the larvae that is developed in the pools of warm, still water can be killed using chemicals or by releasing a fish into these water that can prey on these guppies and eat them before they mature into adults. However, the professor in the lecture contends this idea because, using chemical is not a good idea the adults can fly and its is unlikely to eliminate them. They will again reproduce and there will be no way to wipe out the mosquito population.
Finally, the passage mentions the last way to stop the spread of this disease is to sterile the insect, which in turn will stop them from reproducing as the eggs the women will lay after mating with a sterile male won't hatch and this will wipe out the population of mosquitoes like the screw-worm and other fruit flies. Nevertheless, like the two suggestion before, the professor in the lecture proclaims that this recommendation is not feasible because, the male insects that are sterile are not as effective in mating compared to the wild insects that aren't sterile. This is becasue after the males become sterile their ability to mate reduces or they start looking unattractive to the women insects this leads to women insects not mating with them.
