Coins in Maine
Speaking of a historical European silver coin discovered in the state of Maine, some, including the professor in the lecture, suggest that it was brought by European explorers known as the Norse, while, others, like the author in the reading passage, claim that it might be fake historical evidence. Both have proposed several reasonable explanations which I am going to explore in the following paragraphs.
To begin with, the lecturer acutely identifies a weakness in the article that Maine stood far from eastern Canada where the Norse inhabited, indicating that the coins had nothing to do with the Norse settlement. The lecturer mentions that the Native Americans in Maine were fond of acquiring objects over long distances within North America, meaning that they probably had contact with the Norse and brought back the coins.
Second, even though the author alleges that there weren’t other coins remaining at the Norse sites, implying that the Norse could have come to America without silver coins, the lecturer argues it is a misconception. This is because the coins were so valuable that they packed all of them when they returned to Europe. Thereby, there was a chance that the Norse both arrived in America and went back to Europe with the coins.
Last but not least, the lecturer concurs with the author that the Native Americans wouldn’t have referred to the coins as money, showing that the coins were useless for them. Nevertheless, she points out that, because of the beauty of the coins, the Native Americans might value the coins as appealing and unusual objects. Furthermore, they might engage in trades with the Norse and make the coins into necklaces or jewelry. Accordingly, we can discover the remaining coins in Maine.
