The graph shows the consumption of 3 spreads from 1981 to 2007
The line gives comparisons to the amount of three kinds of spreads consumed in the course of 16 years, starting from 1981.
Overall, it is clearly demonstrated that butter and margarine consumption witnessed a downward trend while the opposite pattern was evident in low fat & reduced spreads.
At the start of the period, butter was the most popular spread with approximately 140grams, roughly 1.5 times higher than the amount of margarine. In the first 5 years, the figure for butter increased significantly to reach the peak of 160 grams, whereas a stark contrast was seen in that of margarine with the decline of nearly 20 grams Subsequently, the use of butter dramatically dwindled throughout the remaining period to hit the unprecedented low point of 50 grams. In addition, margarine consumption surpassed that of butter from 1991 to 1001, followed by a sharp reduction to reach the bottom position of 40 grams in the end.
Regarding low fat & reduced spreads, its consumption only started in 1996 at 10 grams. This figure, which accelerated by 800% 5 years later to take the first rank in the remaining period, finally experienced a gradual fall to over 70 grams.
