The author in the reading states three possible arguments for the use of Chaco structures in the early 12th century A.D. The lecturer disagrees. She finds flaws in all the arguments presented by the author.
First, the author claims that the architecture of the Chaco structure is similar to the early versions of the architecture of the apartment buildings at Taos, New Mexico. Therefore, they were residential buildings. However, the lecturer refutes this claim by saying that, although she agrees that exterior architecture looks similar to that of a residential building, the interior have fewer fireplaces - suppose, 10 fireplaces - for the large size of this structure in which hundreds of families can stay.
Second, the author asserts that the large size of Chaco structures were used to store food like maize. Again, the lecturer disagrees. She goes on say that the exploration of this place have found no evidence for this claim. If this was true, then they would have found spilled maize on the floor or evidence for maize containers in the structure, but neither was the case.
Finally, the author contends that it was used as ceremonial centers because of large number of broken pots which were found in the pile near the Chaco structure. Author adds that they ate festive meats in these ceremonies and dumped these pots after their meals. But the lectures says that this is not true. Along with broken pots, different construction materials and tools were also found in the pile. Hence, she says that these can be the waste produced during the construction and the workers might have thrown their pots after eating their meals.
