Question: Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
In the united state employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees wnat to work four-day week
The article introduces the topic of a 4-day workweek. Specifically, the writer discusses the benefits of a 4-day work week to both employers and employees against the 5-day work week. The lecturer in the listening passage disagrees. He believes that a 4-day workweek is not as beneficial as the writer presents it to be and he attacks each of the claim made in the reading.
First, in the reading passage, the writer begins by stating that a 4-day work week will alleviate some considerable expenses for the average employee. In the listening passage, the lecturer refutes this point by saying that on average, a worker drives 30 miles to work daily and spends an average of about 15 to 20 dollars on gas totaling about 850 in a year and that this amount is not enough to justify such a dramatic business change.
Second, the writer also claims that reducing the number of working days will lower the operating cost of most businesses. Again, the professor believes that there are flaws in the writer’s logic. He holds that the claim of the writer is a misguided conception and that the business can lose up to 20% of its business by going from a 5-day work week to a 4-day work week. He says that although the business will be open for an extra 2 hours later each day, potential customers might not be willing to do business during that extra time and they would rather go home.
Last, the writer posits that a 4-day work week will improve the ability of employees to spend time with their families. However, the professor says that this will not significantly increase the number of time spent by employees with their families. He further says that employees who have younger children enrolled in daycare will have to keep their children for a longer time at the daycare since they will be working 2 hours extra on the 4 days of work and also older children will have to go to school on that 5th day of no work. So this will in no way improve the number of time employees spend with their families.
To sum up, both the author and the speaker have conflicting views about changing to a 4-day workweek. They will have trouble finding some common ground on this issue.
