Overall, people aged 65 and over accounted for the highest percentage of the New Zealand population throughout the period, including the predicted future figures.
In 1950, the proportion of the elderly people ranked first the list with 60%, followed by that of people aged 38 to 45 at around 25%. In the next 40 years, while senior citizens witnessed a mild increase in population growth to 70%, the figure for people aged 14 and under decreased gradually from 5% to almost 1 %. In contrast, the percentage of people aged 38 to 45 rose dramatically to 50% then fail to 40% and unchanged after 20 years. A fluctuation of the data of people aged 25 to 37 was experienced which varied from 20% to 10%.
In 2020, while the younger age group are predicted to rise slightly in population growth, the proportion of people aged 38 to 45 remains stable and growth insignificantly in 2050. The figure for people aged over 65 and that of people aged 25 to 27 have the same downward trend which decline to 55% and 1% respectively.
