The illustrations depict the life span of salmon.
Overall, the life cycle of this large fish is a cyclical, natural process that begins with the hatching of salmon eggs and ends with adult salmon reproducing.
At the first stage, in the upper river, which is slow-moving, salmon eggs are hatched under small stones and next to the reeds for up to six months. After hatching, they become small fish called fry, with a length ranging from 3 to 8 cm. They then move to the lower river, which is fast-flowing, and stay there for the next four years. During this time, the "fry" have grown from 12 to 15 cm in size and are called "smolts."
In the following stage, these "smolts" flow into the open sea and start living there for another five years until their bodies grow enough to be 70 or 76 cm long. Adult salmon subsequently leave their current habitat for the upper river to give birth to their eggs and start a new life span for their species.
