The reading and the lecture are both about a phenomenon called the Transient Lunar Phenomena or TLP, which is a short flash of light that seems to stem from the surface of the Moon. While the author of the reading passage suggests some reasons for the creation of TLP, the professor frowns upon all these reasons. He states that none of the reasons proposed by the writer explains the TLP. The lecturer casts doubt on the main points mentioned in the article by providing three controversial reasons.
In the reading passage, the writer begins by saying that the flaws in the telescopes might account for TLP. However, the professor refutes this idea. He asserts that if the observation of TLP was because of defects in telescopes, the TLP would be observed randomly and in arbitrary locations on the Moon. But, all the reports and evidence have shown that TLP only has been seen in two specific locations on the Moon.
Furthermore, according to the article, meteors' strike to the Moon can be the reason for TLP. On the other hand, the professor points out that the light or the flash produced by meteors' collision can be observed for few seconds, not for the time spell of twenty minutes, which is the time length that some TLP has been seen. Besides, meteoric showers cannot be blamed for TLP since no TLP has been reported at the same time that meteoric showers have happened.
Finally, the author believes that the reflection of the sunlight on some rocks of the Moon can cause TLP. Not surprisingly, the professor repudiates this assertion by contending that we can see the Moon at night because of the reflection of the sunlight. It is impossible to see the TLP while you can see the Moon since the reflected light from the Moon is much brighter than the reflected light from a bunch of rocks.
To sum up, both the lecturer and the author hold conflicting views on the main reasons that are responsible for the formation of TLP.
