The implementation of compulsory military service by various nations as a defense strategy and patriotism promoter presents itself as an attractive concept. However, I vehemently disagree with the idea of extending this obligation to both men and women.
Firstly, military service imposes rigorous physical and mental demands. Individuals with physical disabilities or medical conditions cannot always meet these demands, putting their safety at risk. Furthermore, combat situations can lead to long-term emotional distress and trauma for soldiers. The American Psychological Association reports that soldiers who have experienced combat are more likely to suffer from PTSD and depression compared to non-combat veterans.
Moreover, compulsory military service disregards personal freedom and autonomy. This infringement of individual rights and liberties denies individuals the opportunity to voluntarily serve their country based on personal beliefs and convictions. Such voluntary service carries a deeper sense of commitment and dedication.
Additionally, the idea of compulsory military service for women raises gender equality concerns. Women may face discrimination and unequal treatment within the military. For instance, the Israeli Defense Forces have been criticized for assigning women to non-combat roles, despite their capabilities. The compulsory military service for women may also perpetuate societal attitudes that view women as inferior to men.
In conclusion, while compulsory military service seems like a practical solution for national defense, it comes with numerous challenges and negative consequences. Instead, promoting voluntary service allows individuals to choose to serve their country based on personal beliefs and convictions. This results in a dedicated and effective military, and a patriotic and inclusive society.
