The reading and the lecture are both about the declining in the sea otter which lives in the western coast. More specifically, in regard to the passage, the writer presents three theories about pollution causes and its effect on the drop of these sea animals. The lecturer disputes the claims made in the article. His position is that the predator theory it is the cause for this pattern of depletion.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states there are some sources of pollutants in the sea such as oil and chemical materials from factories. The article mentions that this type of pollution can reduce the immunity of these animals which cause its death. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that pollution theory is weaken and cat not cause the death of all these fauna because no remains for otters on the sea. Additionally, He points out that otters consist with predator for support, and if the first theory is true otter cannot wash up on the shore.
Secondly, the author suggests there is a decline in other types of animals in the sea, so whatever the cause of reduce the number for these animals leads to death of otters. In the article it is said that orca can likely to hunt large animals only. Again, the speaker specifically addresses this point when he states this disappear is because human hunters. He goes on to say that orca can consume small animals too.
Finally, the author brings his argument to a close by suggesting that the unusual pattern of these animals can support the theory because there is fluctuation in their numbers in many places. Not surprisingly, the professor takes issue with this claim by contending that this explanation can support orca theory because orca is big, so they cannot eat otters when they locate in shallow water on near rocks. He notes that this variation in their number because of predator theory.
