sound of submarines
The passage asserts that Russian submarine detected some strange sounds named quackers and provided three possible arguments to explain those sounds. The professor, on the contrary, debunks this point and rejects all mentioned arguments in the passage.
First, the reading claims that the sound was from male and female ocra whale in the nearby regions. The professor casts doubt on this point. She states that at the first glance it is plausible reason, but it is unlikely since the population of orca whale live in the ocean's surface not deep ocean while submarine move in deeper parts of the ocean which sonar no longer is able to detect orca.
Second, the detected sound by the Russian submarine was the sound of giant squids since they were able to emit sound, according to the article. The lecturer disavows this idea by saying that Giant squids are a better candidate for this argument, but the squids were conspicuous in the 1960 while there was no squids in two decades later in 1980. So there is no solid evidence why they disappeared during this period suddenly.
Third, the author of the passage imparts that detected sound was from foreign submarines equipped by undetectable technology. The professor repudiates this argument and says that submarines move in different direction, and new technology enabled their engines to be silent in the deep ocean which they never emit the quackers.
