The below chart illustrates shifts in some types of travel used by per capita in England from 1985 to 2000.
It is apparent that while walking, bicycle, and local bus had a downward trend, the opposite was true in car, long distance bus, train, taxi, and others. In addition, the total number of tourists increased and the figure for the car was dominant throughout this period.
Moving to a more detailed analysis, in 1985, the average distance traveled by an Engish in a car was 3,199 miles, then grew to 4806 miles in 2000. Besides, although the commuters in 2000 used taxis more threefold than those in 1985, this type accounted for a mere 42 miles. There was a dramatic increase in train and other, with 366 miles and 585 miles respectively.
According to the table, the figure for walking fell slightly from 255 miles to 237 miles. In terms of bicycles, the year 1985 witnessed 51 miles used by a person and later decreased to the same level as a taxi in 2000. Finally, there was a significant decline in the local bus, from 429 miles to 274 miles.
