My Speaking text

My father helped me to learn driving a few years ago. This is very important for me for two reasons. First, driving is essential for everybody regarding to the pace of today’s life. For example, I am working in a company and have lots of appointments due to my job. Therefore, I drive my own car to be on time. Secondly, the cars in driving training centers have two clutches and brakes pedals and the instructor may use them without you know it. But my father taught me with his own car and took the risk of any possible accident. Therefore, my father helped me to learn driving practically and applicably.

a wrong sentence:
the instructor may use them without you know it.

Description: 'it, them' refers to what? Be sensitive to use pronouns. and 'without' is used wrongly here.

I want to say "pedals may be used by the instructor but you don't know that the instructor was using the pedals. Therefore, you won't learn driving practically." Them refers to "pedals" and it refers to "using pedals". Could you tell me what to use instead of "without"? And how to correct this wrong sentence? Thank you.
