Since carbon dioxide contributes enormously to global warming, increasing phytoplankton by iron fertilization is expected to slow global warming. However, there are many potential problems with iron fertilization.
The reading asserts that the way of increasing phytoplankton by iron fertilization has several serious problems, while the lecture insists these worries can be well addressed.
First, the passage points out that iron fertilization contributes a little to CO2 absorption with the evidence of a low amount of CO2 absorptions in the experiments. The professor refutes the effectiveness of the experience because of its short time. Although it is true the increases stay low in the first month, the amount of CO2 absorptions will increase in the second or third month since the function of phytoplankton takes time.
Besides, the professor claims that we can just stop using iron as the nutrition so that the risk of environmental toxins, apparently challenging the second point of the reading that the toxins produced by the quick growth of phytoplankton would be detrimental to the health of some species of fish and humans who may consume these fishes. What's more, a substitute for fertilizing phytoplankton that is not toxic to creatures can be easily found, as the lecture points out.
Third, the risk of destroying the oceans' ecological balance within the iron-rich environment does exist, as the reading states. However, the lecturer regards it as an inevitable price for us to take if we plan to slow down global climate, which is of much greater importance for humans to face.
