Theatre Club Room Changed
As part of the universities many efforts to enhance the extracurricular experience of students, the room in which the theatre club currently meets will be moved from its current campus location to a professional theatre downtown. The university feels that this move will benefit club members since the new location will offer state-of-the-art equipment, including professional lighting, sound, and decoration. In addition, the new downtown location is expected to attract a larger audience, as this location will bring in not only students but non-university theatergoers as well.
Question
Explain the man’s opinion of the letter and the reasons he gives for holding his opinion.
W: Hey Jim, you’re in the theatre club, right?
M: Yeah, why?
W: Aren’t you excited about the new room you’ll be performing in?
M: Not really. I don’t think the university put much thought into the decision.
W: What do you mean?
M: Well, the school’s idea is that we’ll have better equipment to use, which is true, but we’re all beginners. The room we’re in now has basic equipment and it takes most people about a year to learn how to use it well.
W: [surprised] So you don’t like the idea of new equipment?
M: I do, but not if you don’t know how to use it. I think that there are going to be a lot of performances in which something goes wrong because the equipment wasn’t set up properly.
W: What about the new location? You have to be excited about performing downtown.
M: [laughs] I don’t mean to be so negative, but most students don’t have cars and taking the bus downtown is a real pain. I’m certain our audience will be at least cut in half. Plus, theatergoers that aren’t involved with the school aren’t going to want to see our plays when they can go to one of the professional theaters next door.
